Cooperative Care Program with Hands off Handling

If your dog struggles with nail trims, vet visits, grooming or handling - cooperative care is the answer

Hands off Handling is a style of cooperative care that teaches your dog how to cooperate and participate with us in the process of grooming, veterinary care, and any other handling we may need to do for their health or safety. Some of these activities simply aren’t comfortable by nature (vaccines, cleaning lacerations, checking for injuries). However, showing our dogs that they *do* have choices, expands their tolerance to accept and participate in grooming and vet care. While we will still of course use our hands for actual care and grooming, the goal is to not need to physically restrain or hold dogs still and in place.

Imagine being at the dentist and not being able to ask for a break, or being able to communicate that something is painful. Two way communication frees us, and our dogs, of the stress, panic and anxiety that comes along with feeling trapped to endure a procedure that can quickly become overwhelming. It’s been a key for successful care for animals in zoos, keeping everyone safe without the need for physical restraint or sedation.

Cooperative care training can help ensure that dogs receive the best possible care, while also reducing stress and improving the relationship between dogs and their handlers.

Teaching these skills is also highly recommended before they are needed to keep handling easy throughout your dog’s lifetime.
